FOODS most likely for a child to choke on include:

  • Hot dogs
  • Carrots
  • Peanuts
  • Hard candy
  • Popcorn
  • Peanut butter and other sticky foods
  • Grapes
  • Peanuts
O OFFER choices of foods and small servings to young children.
O OBSERVE children while they eat and watch for choking. Use eating times for pleasant conversation, talk about the foods they like and dislike.
D DON’T force children to eat all of the food on their plates. This can lead to eating disorders.
